Celebrating #NationalApprenticeshipWeek at Charlton

Wiltshire College & University Centre has been highlighting Apprentices with National Apprenticeship Week with short VT’s. One of their ‘Apprentice Hero’s’ is our very own Milly Rawlings. Watch her short VT about her experience by clicking here. Milly is studied the Level 3 Horticulture Supervisor apprenticeship. Milly’s progress in her role has been outstanding and she now occupies the role of Head Gardener here at Charlton Park Estate. She has also been supporting another starter apprentice here at the Estate.

We are proud of the progress Milly has made and pleased that we are able to offer this route of education and practical learning. Apprenticeships can help individuals to develop the skills and knowledge required for a rewarding career and the bank of knowledge available from all our team members is a huge asset. Our apprentices are integral members of our team and a shared investment in growth, learning and development is a huge part of the journey for both Charlton Park Estate but also for our members of staff.

Horse & Hound Includes Riding Permit

National publication Horse & Hound has picked up the debate on riding permits.

Horse & Hound debate riding permits
Horse & Hound picks up on rural access debate and riding permits

National publication Horse & Hound has picked up the debate on riding permits and access for the equestrian community and included Charlton Park Estate as an example of a growing trend in private landowners offer permitted riding routes to local equestrian communities. To read the article by Horse & Hound click here.

We are so pleased to be able to offer this level of access to the local community and that we can link up with existing bridleways to further network the access.

The national debate about access, road safety and fees for riding on public land make it tricky for riders to find places to enjoy the countryside. We hope that those who have taken up the opportunity are enjoying the beauty of our Estate.

About GCN Mini Documentary

Cycling With Dogs! Is Bikejoring As Barking Mad As It Looks? Dogs and sleds go hand in hand, but what do you do if there’s no snow? Bikejoring is the answer, with dogs pulling bikes instead! When we found out about this sport, we had to send Hank to give it a go – is it really as barking mad as it sounds?!

Calling all Birdwatchers!

Calling all Birdwatchers and Wildlife enthusiasts!

The 2022 Big Farmland Bird Count is taking place between the 4th and 20th February 2022 and we are looking for volunteers to join our team to help with collecting this very important data.

Big Farmland Bird Count

Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) say, ‘This important initiative offers a simple means of recording the effect of any conservation schemes currently being initiated by farmers and gamekeepers on their land such as supplementary feeding or growing wild bird seed crops and game cover crops. It is also a useful way of gaining personal insight on how well their birds are faring.’ To find out more click here to watch a short VT from the GWCT about the count.

If you would like to take part please DM us, email or call the Estate office with your name, telephone and email address so we can co-ordinate the count. Click here to visit our contact page.

Arboreal Works to Manage Ash Dieback

Arboreal Works Scheduled to Manage Ash Dieback

We appreciate that carrying out these works may cause some minimal disruption on the rounds surrounding the estate which, is regrettable and we thank you in advance for your patience. However, the removal of infected trees along these roads are to manage the risk of diseased trees falling in the public highway. The works will be carried out by specialist contractors supported by our own Estate team over the forthcoming weeks.

We plan to replant these areas with native species to further support the natural habitats and local wildlife needs.

Ash Dieback felling works at Charlton Park Estate About Ash dieback

According to the Woodland Trust up to 80% of the UK’s Ash population will suffer from this disease and be lost. Ash dieback (Hymenoscyphus fraxineus) is a fungus which originated in Asia.

It doesn’t cause much damage on its native hosts of the Manchurian ash (Fraxinus mandshurica) and the Chinese ash (Fraxinus chinensis) in its native range.

However, its introduction to Europe about 30 years ago has devastated the European ash (Fraxinus excelsior) because our native ash species did not evolve with the fungus and this means it has no natural defence against it.

Barbury Simulated Shoot
Barbury Shooting School now offers Simulated Shooting Days at Charlton Park Estate

About Barbury Shooting School

Acquired by Huw Stephens in 2007, the school has grown in size and reputation over the past 14 years culminating in the most recent projects to rebuild the clubhouse and further extend the grounds. As well adding a large café, private function room and gun shop, BSS has also added 4 new covered Sportrap layouts, a new high tower and driven game area. These improvements made BSS the natural choice to host the English Open in 2021 and several other leading competitions.

As the school has grown so has the number of staff required to run this slick operation. With Huw Stephens still at the helm, he is ably supported by his Office Manager Lorna Davies and Assistant Manager Joshua Brown who head up a team 20 staff.  The gun room is managed by Craig Hartley and his team.

Open 7 days a week the gun room has an exceptional collection of new and second-hand shotguns from leading manufacturers available for purchase as well as a range of shooting accessories and gifts.

Barbury Shooting School is open 7 days a week for sporting practice and there’s no need to book. There’s a dedicated sporting layout available where the targets are changed every week and the addition of a Claymate system also means that lone shooters are welcome.
