About Soay Sheep

The Soay sheep is a breed of domestic sheep (Ovis aries) descended from a population of feral sheep on the 100-hectare (250-acre) island of Soay in the St Kilda Archipelago, about 65 kilometres (40 mi) from the Western Isles of Scotland. It is one of the Northern European short-tailed sheep breeds. The breed is listed in “Category 4: At Risk” by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust, because there are only between 900 and 1500 registered breeding Soay ewes.

Brokenborough’s Jubilee Beacon

To mark the momentous occasion of The Queens Platinum Jubilee in Brokenborough a substantial beacon built by Jason wood from our Estate’s farming team was lit last night by Farm Manager Robin Aird. This is a wonderful shot of the local community gathering to celebrate in the light of the beacon.

Beacons across the length and breadth of the country and around the commonwealth were lit on the evening of Thursday 2ndJune as a symbol of unity and celebration for the 70th year of The Queens selfless servitude to the crown. This is the first time a British Monarch has celebrated this milestone and it won’t be seen again in our living memory.

We do hope The Queen and her country has an enjoyable weekend of celebrations.

May Fishing Report

May Fishing Report

Bill Morris Shares His Thoughts on Using a Heavier Line

Following on from Bill’s April fishing report his latest review and advice is below accompanied by some great views from the riverbank.

“Fishing has really taken off with the mayfly, despite continued low water levels. The top beat seems little fished and so far, l have caught the largest fish I have ever seen on that part of the river this week I have ever seen from the top of beat 1. The catch was nestled in a hole between branches overhanging the bankside.

“I would recommend using a heavier line that normal. My second tip this month is to mix up your mayflies and be patient. The fish are becoming a little slow to react with full stomachs from the hatch, so set aside some time to spend on the river to reap your reward. Good luck everyone and happy fishing.”
